Empowering Neurodivergent Voters Across Virginia
About Us
Vote the Spectrum Virginia is a statewide organization committed to empowering neurodivergent voters and their advocates at the local and state levels. Headquartered in Charlottesville, VA, we are led by CEO Andrew Markwalter, passionate about advancing this critical mission. We aim to ensure that neurodivergent voices are heard and supported in the democratic process. For questions or inquiries, feel free to contact us at info@votethespectrumva.org.
What We Do
Partner with the Virginia Institute of Autism to host workshops that educate and empower neurodivergent individuals about their rights and the voting process.
Collaborate with schools and special education classrooms to organize "mock elections," helping neurodivergent individuals familiarize themselves with the voting experience in a supportive, hands-on environment.
Work directly with local and state elected officials to advocate for policies that promote the rights and needs of neurodivergent individuals and ensure that they are heard in the legislative process.
Expand chapters across Virginia, from Grundy to Virginia Beach, to broaden our reach and support neurodivergent communities statewide.
Register voters to ensure that neurodivergent individuals have the opportunity to participate fully in the democratic process.
A Message From Our Founder and CEO, Andrew Markwalter
"As someone who is neurodivergent, I know firsthand the challenges that many face when trying to engage with systems that aren't designed with us in mind. This personal experience fuels my passion for Vote the Spectrum Virginia. I’m committed to ensuring that neurodivergent individuals in Virginia have the resources, support, and opportunities to participate fully in our democratic process. Our mission is not just about advocacy—it’s about creating a system where every voice, regardless of neurological makeup, is heard and valued. I’m honored to lead this effort, and together, we can build a more inclusive and accessible future for all.
Headquartered in Charlottesville, VA, and initially founded as Vote the Spectrum Charlottesville, I started this organization to form critical partnerships across the community and advocate for policy changes and increased support for neurodivergent individuals. We’ve had the privilege of collaborating with organizations like the Virginia Institute of Autism and faculty members at the University of Virginia, and we’re proud to see our reach and impact grow as we continue to advocate for neurodiverse individuals across the Commonwealth.
As an incoming Batten Master of Public Policy candidate and a proud 3+1 graduate of UVA, I’m excited to leverage the lessons I’ve learned to continue growing our mission and expanding our partnerships. If you'd like to connect or have questions about our work, feel free to contact me at andrew@votethespectrumva.org.”
